Dig Hole Puzzle

If it took...

...Alex, Blake & Charlie exactly 60 minutes to dig a hole...

how long would it take for them...

...to dig half a hole?

Solution (Previous Puzzle):

3.

If we denote Alex by A, Blake by B, Charlie by C and Drew by D we can find the answer in the following way.

Since A + B + C = D and A + B + C + D = 44, it is easy to see that D has 22 sheep.

So A + B + C = 22.

We can use this along with the two other facts, A + 3 = B - 1 and C - 3 = 3A, to find that A has 3, B has 7, C has 12 and D has 22.

In a little more detail:

A + B + C = 22 (1)
A + 3 = B - 1 (2)
C - 3 = 3A (3)

Rearrange (3) to give C = 3A + 3 and replace the C in (1) to give A + B + 3A + 3 = 22.

Simplified this gives B = 19 - 4A (4).

Rearrange (2) to give B - A = 4.

Use (4) in the place of B to give 19 - 4A - A = 4 to give A = 3.

Now use A to work out B, and then C.

It’s a common saying that elephants never forget. But the more we learn about elephants, the more it appears that their impressive memory is only one aspect of an incredible intelligence that makes them some of the most social, creative, and benevolent creatures on Earth. Alex Gendler takes us into the incredible, unforgettable mind of an elephant.
On the final episode of Seth Godin’s Startup School we learn the importance of being distinct and direct. Seth explains why people at the top get hurt last, why e-mail is the best direct connection to your customers, and why it’s important to have your own distinct voice. Seth shares a technique to get an appointment with impossible to reach top decision makers, discusses why it’s better to act like you don’t have money now, and tells us why he’d rather spend 4 years writing a blog before writing a book in order to build an audience. He also talks about how not to get sued, giving people a souvenir to remember you by, and the rules on naming your company.
